5 Tips on Being a Fashionable Young Professional

As a student, transitioning into the professional world can be quite a shock. Once you graduate, it’s suddenly goodbye lulu leggings and hello stiletto heels. There isn’t a college course on how to dress for success, and no one tells you how to create a professionally polished wardrobe. Fortunately, thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and the stylish ladies on Gossip Girl, I had my fair share of fashion training before my first “real job.”

Here are my five tips on how to elevate your young professional fashion.

1. Have a Power Outfit

Standing with your hands on your hips is considered a power pose and has been proven to raise testosterone levels which “leads to increased feelings of confidence.” Why not increase your confidence levels with a power outfit too? Having a go-to outfit that you know and love can increase your confidence and help you feel more confident at your next event or important meeting.

2. Don’t Take Your Work Environment for Granted

Even if your job doesn’t require strict business attire, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a free-for-all when it comes to dress code. I have always been a firm believer in dressing for success. Whether you are sitting for an important test or going on a first date, the way you look plays a big role in the outcome. Your workplace may let you wear sweats and UGG boots, but that doesn't mean you should. Save those sweats for bingeing Netflix and wear your power suit to get work done.

3. Have Some Professional Staples

Looking professional and polished is easy when you have the right staples. Stock your closet with some stylish blazers, blouses, pants and heels. Match a blazer and heels with a tank and some nice leggings and you’re ready to enter the working world.

4. Being Professional Doesn’t Mean Being Boring

Trendy professional clothes don’t have to be black, white and gray. It’s 2020 - it’s time for us to say no to blending in and say yes to standing out. The key to being fashionable is having some bold statement pieces. My go-to items that I like to have fun with are blazers/coats, purses and shoes. You’d be surprised at how different your outfit will look when you swap those black pumps for red ones.

5. Don’t Be Forced Out of Your Comfort Zone

Dressing professionally is not a one-size-fits-all situation. If you’re not someone who’s comfortable wearing dresses or skirts in your everyday life, don’t feel pressured to wear them in the workplace. Hate heels? There are plenty of alternatives including flats, boots and sandals. You should wear what makes you feel good, inside and out.
