EMBreaking News: 808s And The Heartbreak of Not Understanding SEO

Kanye West continued his public lambasting against Adidas by claiming the shoe brand is conspiring to further steal his intellectual property.
The musician turned shoe and fashion designer had a long-standing partnership with Adidas, beginning in 2013 with the release of the acclaimed ‘Yeezy’ shoe that sold millions of pairs. However, the partnership dissolved caustically in 2022 when Adidas dropped the rapper.
Since then, Kanye has repeatedly attacked the brand. Most recently, he asserted that Adidas is committing design theft and oppression and is “holding [him] back.” In a now-deleted Instagram post, West shows his followers that a search result for “yeezy” populates adidas.com before yeezy.com.
To that, we say, “Wake up, Mr. West.” This isn’t about organizational conspiracy but search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is the marketing practice of optimizing your website to better rank on search engines, helping your brand connect with more people.
Effective SEO isn’t just nice to have; even companies like Kanye West’s Yeezy, which benefits from his celebrity endorsement, need SEO to truly thrive. The fact that his company ranks lower than Adidas for “yeezy” even though Adidas no longer has Yeezy stock on its website is a testament to Adidas’ SEO power.
Our analysis of the Adidas website revealed a thorough representation of effective SEO practices—something Kanye West’s minimalist Yeezy website does not do.
