How to Write Content That Keeps the Reader Interested

It’s no surprise that Internet trends are changing, and fast. The Internet is so influential that people are changing their habits to  match the latest trends. One of the biggest trends that the marketing world is noticing is the way that people are reading stories. The industry to take the biggest hit from this: the news, local and national broadcasting. Gone are the days when people would sit and read the newspaper or tune in for their favorite programming. Now are the days when people want news and they want it fast. They also don’t want to read about it for a very long period of time. The norm for digesting content and news reflects the way influencers are releasing information.

People want to see pictures, videos, and little witty blurbs that don’t contain a lot of writing. That type of content is easily digestible and easily shareable. This impacts (or should impact) what kind of content you’re writing. For instance, if you’re writing a wordy, long, blog post, that contains important information, but isn’t broken up with images, then you’ve already lost half your readers. Attention spans are diminishing and the act of reading is taking a plummet. For producing blog content or writing content, we suggest:

  1. Shortened paragraphs – people may not even consider content if there is too much reading involved.
  2. Lists – are a great way to have a lot of information written in a clear and concise way.
  3. Images – Break up your paragraphs with images, or start and end your story with an image.
  4. Infographic – Write a story but explain with an infographic (but don’t use confusing graphs and statistics).
  5. Disguise information – disguise your extensive depth of knowledge with witty writing and good humor. A great example of this is Buzzfeed or Upworthy. These sites can be insightful or informational, while not being too formal. They’re interesting and definitely cater to the millennial.
